“My parents have Kabletown down in Pennsylvania….It’s a fine and generous company.”
Hopefully this 30 Rock scene will pop up on the internet shortly. Art imitating recent life events with the NBC/Comcast merger, 30 Rock’s recent episode places NBC at the hands of a cable company called “Cable Town” (with a “K”, so “Cable Town”) who plans to buy NBC from General Electric after the GE owner in the television show passes away.
There is a scene where Alec Baldwin, playing the cold-hearted but loyal head of NBC Jack Donaghy, is sickened that the media company is being bought out by the cable company ( which in the show is based in Philadelphia, the same as Comcast. )
Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) replies how one of her relatives has Kable Town, and says that Kable Town is a “kind and generous company” as she gives a very apparent smile straight to the camera. The merger deal is still in hiatus, as it is currently being reviewed by US lawmakers in Congress.
Funny, the cup of Joel blog was already on top of this months ago.

Rusty Belle has been an underground folk-punk-acousto-roots force that always puts on a great show. What they sound like on their album is also what they sound like live: furious yet contained, archaic yet deliberate, edgy combined with rhythmic meticulousness.
Rusty Belle hails out of the heavy folk & indie scene in Northampton, Massachusetts. But their music sounds so much beyond what one can describe; you can only listen to their work and decide for yourself. Every song has its own imagination; even our pick of the week isn’t a great representation of this band. Check out Rusty Belle’s Myspace page for more of their great stuff.
http://www.vimeo.com/9946040#Gorillaz has released another banger. Their musical machinations with electronics, hip-hop-styled beats, and their penchant to break the mold on song structure, comes together real well in this hit. Stylo will stay in your mind from the moment you hear it; it is crazy enough that it probably won’t get a lot of airplay ( though it should ). Also, Bruce Willis makes an appearance in the music video as well.
“No cuts, no fees, education must be free!”
The above quote was the battle cry for many students and activist who protested for public education in California today. There were similar protests around the nation, which were created to promote a need for affordable and cheaper public education. Above photo credit goes to Evan Walbridge of the Daily Cal.

Cat Whisker Radio is a band that plays in the Beantown area and has been getting a buzz over the last month. You may have seen them at small shows, but their sound is very tight. If to relate to you how they sound as a band, I would take one can of #Foo-Fighters, mixed with two teaspoons of #STP post-album #4 days, with a sprinkle of Dylan/Stokes in the chorus.
For their songs ( showcased on their Myspace page ), the production could use some equalizing/filtering on the high-end frequencies, but all-in-all they are a very enjoyable new band on the scene. Some upcoming shows:

“Oh no! More anti-smoking propaganda that will tell me the reasons why smoking is bad. Screw off!”
Yes, smoking isn’t good. But this isn’t about quitting, per se I am not writing this as a blog intervention to your personal vices. But I only want to say this; if you have the power to smoke, you have the power to stop smoking (or at the least moderate it).
Moderation is rarely taught in college. There are classes depicting the horrors of drinking and partying, and the cons of failing grades due to sloth, but the technique to truly moderate our lives doesn’t exist in our textbooks. We have to learn it on our own, through our own mistakes, and our realizations.
Smoking cigarettes has three problems with it. They are not good for you, we can all agree to this. We can also agree that they are not cheap.
(New York Cigs) “$8 bucks a pack! Every time I buy a pack, I think ‘For another 2, I could be smoking crack.’ “
- Dave Attell
The third problem is that no one concerns themselves with moderation. For cigarettes, it is all or nothing. So you will win by letting them go, or lose by abusing your lungs and your pocketbook. With the cost of textbooks, food, and nightclub covers, cigarettes are an expense you might want to tackle sooner rather than later.
If you are in college now, you have just found yourself on the front line of making long-term decisions to control your life. You probably just started smoking, or have been smoking over the course of high school. The decision to buy a pack a day now, will affect you for the rest of your life. It is harder to manage your cigarettes when you are 40 than when you are 20.
Learn to moderate the nicotine sticks now. Moderate, or walk away from them entirely. You are strong enough to do both.
