#1 Pick of The Week 03.11.10 – Red Knife Lottery – So Much Drama

Red Knife Lottery is a punk band that one of our writers showcased in a blog two years ago. Since that time, the band has recorded a new album, and has expanded their sound to incorporate more bluesy and eclectic sounds into their music.

One of the elements of their production that was amazing for their 2005 EP “So Much Drama” was that the band had cultivated the songs, and lead singer Ashley Chapman had created her lyrics and stories to fit the songs after the songs were already done. Their current tour seems to plant them around their locality in Wisconsin, but hopefully we can see them in more venues around the States.

We would place their current single as our pick of the week, but we would do great dishonesty by not showcasing one of the best albums that never hit the airwaves. And it should.

Top 5 Music Picks of the Week – 03.11.10 – #2 Sylvia Robinson – Gimme A Little Action

YouTube Preview Image

#Sylvia Robinson coordinated the production and sang on an album ( Pillow Talk – 1972) that would become the blueprint for the disco movement to come. She also would go on to create Sugar Hill Records, well-known for producing the first mainstream hip-hop song (by the Sugar Hill gang).

Her vocals are very sensual, and her sexual gasps and exasperations mold well with her R&B-in-the-bed themes. She never disappoints. If you are a fan of 70’s music, R&B, or good laid-back music, Sylvia is a great addition to your iTunes playlist, if you can find her music.

Matthew Ray of Connecting the Notes did a musicology show on Mrs. Robinson’s entire career. If Wikipedia or Youtube doesn’t satisfy your hunger, check out his Sylvia podcast here.

Top 5 Music Picks of the Week – 03.11.10 – #3 Lloyd B – Beamer,Benz, or Bentley

Shout-out to the @5th Pro Show at Amherst College for this beat. Every time I hear Juelz, I think what the hell happened to #Heatmakerz? I spent many days in college partying with full “Diplomatic Immunity”.

Top 5 Music Picks of the Week – 03.11.10 – #4 Lil Wayne – Runnin Audio/Video

YouTube Preview Image

The chorus singer #Chanell aka SNL gives this song a lot of power. Is she the next Dido? Or the next Eve? This song could be a single but there is something lacking that the radio playlists need. Could not see this being a cross-over song, even though it would be a great song to hear. Nothing against you Lil Weezy; even Henry Rollins has problems getting on the air.

The fans will love this song nonetheless.

30 Rock to Kabletown: A Kind and Generous Company (Comcast)(Video)

“My parents have Kabletown down in Pennsylvania….It’s a fine and generous company.”

Hopefully this 30 Rock scene will pop up on the internet shortly. Art imitating recent life events with the NBC/Comcast merger, 30 Rock’s recent episode places NBC at the hands of a cable company called “Cable Town” (with a “K”, so “Cable Town”) who plans to buy NBC from General Electric after the GE owner in the television show passes away.

There is a scene where Alec Baldwin, playing the cold-hearted but loyal head of NBC Jack Donaghy, is sickened that the media company is being bought out by the cable company ( which in the show is based in Philadelphia, the same as Comcast. )

Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) replies how one of her relatives has Kable Town, and says that Kable Town is a “kind and generous company” as she gives a very apparent smile straight to the camera. The merger deal is still in hiatus, as it is currently being reviewed by US lawmakers in Congress.

Funny, the cup of Joel blog was already on top of this months ago.

#1 Pick of The Week 03.04.10 – #1 Rusty Belle – Doggy

Rusty Belle has been an underground folk-punk-acousto-roots force that always puts on a great show. What they sound like on their album is also what they sound like live: furious yet contained, archaic yet deliberate, edgy combined with rhythmic meticulousness.

Rusty Belle hails out of the heavy folk & indie scene in Northampton, Massachusetts. But their music sounds so much beyond what one can describe; you can only listen to their work and decide for yourself. Every song has its own imagination; even our pick of the week isn’t a great representation of this band. Check out Rusty Belle’s Myspace page for more of their great stuff.

Top 5 Music Picks of The Week 03.04.10 – #2 Gorillaz – Stylo (Music Video Premiere)

#Gorillaz has released another banger. Their musical machinations with electronics, hip-hop-styled beats, and their penchant to break the mold on song structure, comes together real well in this hit. Stylo will stay in your mind from the moment you hear it; it is crazy enough that it probably won’t get a lot of airplay ( though it should ). Also, Bruce Willis makes an appearance in the music video as well.

Top 5 Music Picks of The Week 03.04.10 – #4 – Amherst State of Mind

#Umass needed a song to represent them. Instead of being known for constant riots showcased on Youtube or the meat-head churning factories of North Amherst and Southwest, this song straight puts it out there.

The above quote was the battle cry for many students and activist who protested for public education in California today. Boston Music: Cat Whisker Radio Hi-Fi Pop Sound Very Memorable

Cat Whisker Radio is a band that plays in the Beantown area and has been getting a buzz over the last month. You may have seen them at small shows, but their sound is very tight. If to relate to you how they sound as a band, I would take one can of #Foo-Fighters, mixed with two teaspoons of #STP post-album #4 days, with a sprinkle of Dylan/Stokes in the chorus.

For their songs ( showcased on their Myspace page ), the production could use some equalizing/filtering on the high-end frequencies, but all-in-all they are a very enjoyable new band on the scene. Some upcoming shows:

March 3rd Show @ Emmanuel College (8pm)

March 5th Show @ The Raven in Worcester, MA (also @8pm)
